infrared sauna

At Fitness Genome, we provide a wide range of therapies and modalities to promote wellness, shorten recovery from injury or training, and improve the quality of our clients’ lives.  At our Carlsbad office, we currently offer Sunlighten 3 in 1 Infrared Sauna therapy to harness the power of the infrared light spectrum to provide a multitude of health benefits.

The Sunlighten 3 in 1 Infrared Sauna therapy heats the body directly rather than simply warming the air, it raises the core body temperature and produces a deep, detoxifying sweat at the cellular level where most toxins reside. Your sweat then pushes out the toxins, cleansing your body and rejuvenating your skin.

Infrared Saunas work by:

  • Direct Heat: Infrared saunas heat the body directly rather than warming the air around you. This allows for a deeper penetration of heat at lower temperatures compared to traditional saunas, making it more bearable for longer periods.
  • Increased Sweating: The deep penetration of infrared heat causes the body’s core temperature to rise, leading to increased sweating. Sweating is one of the body’s natural ways to eliminate toxins.
  • Improved Circulation: As the body heats up, blood flow increases. This enhanced circulation can help reduce inflammation, ease muscle pain, and improve tissue oxygenation, which may speed up recovery and enhance relaxation.
  • Stimulation of Cellular Functions: The exposure to infrared light can stimulate cellular functions and potentially lead to improved cell repair and regeneration. It’s suggested that NIR, in particular, might help with skin renewal, wound healing, and could even have anti-aging effects.

Our Sunlighten is the only sauna that has been proven to raise core body temperature by 3 degrees. Similar to a fever the Sunlighten increases core body temp stimulating white blood cells and T-cells to ward off viruses.

Benefits include:

  • LEDs in our sauna boost immunity in raising T-cell and white blood cell production.
  • Anti-aging and improved skin conditions through increased collagen production.
  • Detox with Sunlighten produces 80-85% water and the rest in toxins while traditional sauna sweat is 95-97% water.
  • Weight loss. In a 30-minute weight loss session up to 600 calories burned.
  • Proven to lower blood pressure and improve circulation.
  • Support for cardiovascular health
  • Better Sleep
  • Pain relief from conditions such as arthritis

How Are Infrared Saunas Different From Traditional Saunas

Infrared saunas and traditional saunas offer distinct experiences and operate through different mechanisms. Here are the key differences between them:

  • Heating Method. Traditional saunas use a stove (either wood-burning or electric) to heat the air in the room to high temperatures, which then heats the body primarily through convection and conduction. The air temperature in a traditional sauna can range from about 150°F to 195°F.  Infrared saunas utilize infrared heaters to emit infrared light, which is absorbed directly by the skin without significantly heating the air around you. This direct method of heating allows the body to sweat at lower ambient temperatures, usually around 120°F to 150°F.
  • Humidity.  Traditional saunas often have higher humidity, especially if water is thrown onto the hot stones of the sauna heater, generating steam. The high heat and humidity can make the air feel much hotter.  In most cases, infrared saunas have lower humidity since the heat is produced by infrared light rather than by heating the air. This results in a drier heat.
  • Heat Penetration.  Traditional saunas heat the body from the outside in, which can sometimes make it difficult for individuals to breathe due to the hot air and can feel more oppressive at higher temperatures. Infrared saunas, on the other hand, heat the body more directly and deeply, as the infrared rays penetrate the skin, potentially offering therapeutic benefits at a lower, more comfortable temperature.
  • Time and Temperature.  Because of the higher temperatures, traditional sauna sessions may be shorter, typically ranging from 5 to 20 minutes.  The lower air temperature of infrared saunas allows for longer sessions, often between 20 to 45 minutes, which some find more comfortable and relaxing.
  • Health Benefits.  Both traditional and infrared sauna types promote relaxation, detoxification through sweating, and muscle relaxation. However, the direct heat of infrared saunas offers additional benefits, such as better penetration for muscle relaxation and pain relief, enhanced detoxification due to deeper tissue penetration, and the potential for increased calorie burn due to the body’s effort to cool itself.
